Carriers Still Don't Realize The Threat Of A Napster For Mobile Phones
It's really not too hard to figure out what's happening in the mobile music space. We've been saying for quite some time that a mobile Napster is on its way and the carriers and the music industry won't be able to stop it. Now, the Guardian has decided to take a look at the space, and the carriers and the recording industry actually seem to believe that digital rights management will magically work this time. It won't. It never has, and mobile phones won't be any different. DRM is easily broken, and, in the end that doesn't even matter since the more open mobile phones become the more they'll be able to route around any carrier installed walls. All you need is an open platform, an MP3 player application on the phone, some software like Xingtone, and all the DRM in the world isn't going to matter.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
