The Wireless Wrist Watch Wallet

Over the last year, a variety of RFID (or similar) payment systems have started to get more attention - often with the idea of embedding it into mobile phones. In the past, we've written about Moneta in Korea, FeliCa in Japan, Dexit in Canada and ExxonMobile's SpeedPass system in the US. Over in Japan, they're now testing the idea of offering a FeliCa enabled wrist watch. They're testing it out with one Japanese company, where twenty-five employees will use the watch for a variety of functions - such as entering the building and buying food at the company restaraunts and stores. While there have been a few attempts at mixing new technologies with the traditional wrist watch, it still seems like a fairly underutilized gadget. It's perfect for acting as a mobile wallet, however, as that shouldn't add any additional heft (a big problem with must fancy techie watches) and it's easily accessible. Of course, you still need to be careful not to start paying for things by accident.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
