Nokia Launches Flip Phones
Nokia phones have traditionally offered the "candy bar" design style where the phone does not fold, and has buttons and the screen on the front. A competing design style, the "clamshell" or "flip" phone was espoused to a greater extent by Motorola and Asian handset vendors, more so in Korea than Japan. The flip feature protects both the screen and the keypad when the phone is not in use, and also reduced length. Over time, the clamshell format has entered more into favor with customers, but Nokia has lacked any handsets with this design. Now, Nokia has jumped into clamshell designs with both feet, launching five new models in Singapore this week just prior to the Communicasia show. With the phones, Nokia has also also filled out their lineup, bolstering their sparse mid-market offerings. The linked article has loads of numeric market data for those interested. Note: I'll be at the Communicasia show in Singapore this week, and hope to post some stories from the show.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
