Time For The FCC To Get Its Act Together On VoIP

from the wasting-time dept

While the FCC has been saying all the right things about not regulating VoIP, they haven't been doing very much to help out. Kevin Werbach is worried that without the FCC getting their act together, entrenched interests are going to damage the opportunities for independent VoIP offerings. He points to the recent (backwards) NY ruling regulating Vonage and the fact that the FCC has done nothing to stop states from doing this. Werbach obviously knows how the FCC works - since he used to work there - but, you have to wonder if this isn't just an issue that will take a bit of time. So far, as mentioned, the FCC has said sensible things about VoIP, but seem to be taking their time organizing any official rulemaking. While there may be some problems in the short term, I'd rather they make a more strategic long term move than rushing out a half-baked decision. Either way, it's likely that this topic will be talked about next week at Werbach's Supernova Conference, which I'll be attending.
