Hong Kong Hotel Goes All IP And Wireless

Here at the Communicasia show, we've learned of The Langham Place Hotel in Hong Kong's $US4.4M all-IP system upgrade which lets guests and staff access all voice and data services throughout the hotel using IP-based equipment. Guests rooms are equipped with a mobile IP phone which provides voice, but also data services, news, weather, hotel services, and even Internet radio. Thanks to the hotel's ubiquitous premise WiFi network, the phone can be used equally well in the Gym, lobby, or restaurant, or even poolside. Of course, the WiFi network can also be used by guests that bring their own WiFi equipment, and by hotel staff to manage operations. The hotel management says they are trying to offer guests "a higher degree of convenience and speed" than they have in their own offices. Techdirt is in love: If San Francisco ever legalizes marriages between weblogs and hotels, we would propose a union with this hotel.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
