Tech Services Companies Eye Enterprise Wireless

Don't look now, but the big tech services firms like IBM and HP see the potential of enterprise wireless. HP just announced plans to sell WiFi into corporate offices. The idea is that they'll set up the networks and then manage the offering themselves. For people with a bit of WiFi experience this may sound silly. How difficult is it to set up a wireless network? However, for many companies, fear over maintaining and securing a WiFi network has held them back. If HP and IBM (who is apparently preparing a similar offering) start pushing heavily into the space, it could jumpstart the enterprise WiFi market. While one analyst in the article claims that WiFi in the office is really just a "nice to have," others may disagree. They're finding that WiFi actually boosts productivity, by providing more flexibility within the office, such as the ability to get things done during meetings.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
