Letting Police Share A Municipal WiFi Network

There are plenty of stories about municipal WiFi networks for police and other public safety officials, and plenty of others about municipal WiFi networks for the public. However, Muniwireless is pointing out that Spokane may be the first that's providing a single network for both kinds of use. I don't know if it's really the first, but it's still interesting. Among the reasons usually given for not doing this is the security of the info traveling across the police network as well as the fact that you don't want the police network to go down because some teens are downloading movies in the park. The Spokane system does away with the first problem by making everyone use a VPN - which could actually increase the second problem in that it slows everything down. It's not entirely clear how they guarantee that public safety gets the bandwidth they need, however.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
