US Internet Penetration Plateaus - Resistors Don't Want On

from the settling-down dept

It looks as though internet penetration in the US may have hit a plateau, as many of those who aren't currently connected are likely to remain that way for the foreseeable future. The group of folks who aren't connected are split into two groups: "resistors" who have access to the internet but actively choose not to use it and the "non-connected" who simply don't have an easy way to get on the internet. The resistors aren't likely to change their minds until some additional services are added that they actually value (the article suggests VoIP). For the non-connected group, the report suggests that cheaper internet access is needed or more Spanish-language ISP offerings, since it appears many of the non-connected users speak Spanish.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Not just illiterate, TECHNICALLY ILLITERATE too !

    Boo Hoo,

So how long till I have to pay an additional fee to my ISP so some dumb immigrant who refuses to learn English can have the Internet converted to Spanish ?

    Give me a break !

This just goes to prove that if your too damn dumb to learn the language of the country that invented the internet, you don't deserve to use it.

So they won't only be illiterate, they can also be technically illiterate.

Makes me happy to know there will be plenty of people to mow my lawn, clean my house and take care of the other menial jobs intelligent people don't have the time to do.

What got to me about living in California was the dumb cashiers who couldn't speak English, who couldn't understand simple orders. Made you want to hit them. Haven't had that problem in the Midwest.

    No Subject Given

They'll find that it's worth their while once businesses (e.g. banks) and government organizations (e.g. motor vehicles departments) make it either more expensive or much more time-consuming to transact business other than over the net. I'm not saying this is a good thing, just that it will happen.

What gets me is when you go to a foreign country and the people there don't have the courtesy to speak English. Who do they think they are anyway?

George W. Bush is fluent in Spanish.
    So is his brother Jeb.
    They HAVE to be.

George is from Texas aka Big Mexico & Jeb is in Florida aka little Cuba / Puerto Rico.

    Gecko,

They always switch to Engrish for me.
Maybe it's those American torist dollars that motivate them.
    What do you think ?
