CES Kills Comdex

from the bye-bye-now dept

For years, people have pointed out that Comdex just doesn't have the same pull it used to. Many people thought that there wouldn't be a Comdex last year after its parent company, Key3Media went bankrupt and other, competing shows, jumped in to take its place. The show still happened, though without much interest. Apparently, the interest is even less this year, and there will be no Comdex this year. They claim that it will come back the following year, but I wouldn't bet too much money on that happening. In the meantime, everyone had already shifted their Las Vegas conference travel plans to January's CES anyway, so it's unlikely this will actually impact anyone.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Poor Taxi Drivers

The taxi drivers were all pissed off by the poor Comdex turnout last November - they were still moaning about it at CES. I can't imagine what they'll be saying when they read this in the paper tomorrow morning.

Heh. The one time I went to Comdex, years back, the taxi driver who took me from the airport to the hotel told me how much she hated everyone going to Comdex because they never tipped well... basically she was bitching me out for tipping poorly before I ever tipped her. Seemed they never liked the Comdex attendees.

Well, they're engineers, what do they expect? Whenever I go out to lunch with colleagues from work every one of them will pull out one of those tip charts so they can leave EXACTLY 15%.

Nah, Taxi drivers could care less. Now the strippers and hookers here are moaning the loss of Comdex. Thats where all the cash was spent.

    Re: Poor Taxi Drivers

There is actually a saying in Las Vegas about Comdex attendies: They come to Vegas for a week with a $20 bill and a shirt, each of which is only changed once.
