More Mobile Phones Than People In Sweden

Oh, the handset makers must be thrilled right now. A few years ago there was a lot of talk about ways to convince everyone they needed more than a single mobile phone as a way of growing their market. The handset makers went around trying to convince people they needed a phone for work, and a phone for fun, and maybe a third phone just to be different. While we had thought those promotions had pretty much gone away, they appear to have taken hold in Sweden, where a new report claims there are now more mobile phones than people. Actually, it's even stranger than that... it's not just more phones than people, but more service plans than people. So, it's not just a case of multiple phones with users flipping in and out sim cards. People are apparently using different services -- but in an expected (if somewhat inefficient) way: one for work and one for home.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
