New Hampshire To Tax Instant Messaging, Email And Chat Rooms

from the brilliantly-stupid dept

Brian writes in to point out that "New Hampshire's tax collecting agency wants to apply a 7 percent tax on a variety of telephone and Internet services from chat rooms to voice mail." They also include web mail and instant messaging in the things that would be taxed. This is even more ridiculous than Florida's plans to tax your WiFi network. The New Hampshire "Department of Revenue Administration" tries to lamely justify this new tax, saying they're just updating old rules for new technologies, but can't seem to come up with a good justification for doing this... perhaps because there is no good justification for doing this.

    Aren't they the ones

that make their obnoxious boasts about having no property tax? There is a price to pay for that, in the end.

Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.

Right you are: no sales or income tax, but the NH property taxes more than make up for that.
