UK Military Buys Overhyped Gartner Report, Bans iPods

from the seems-a-bit-late... dept

Last week someone at Gartner woke up and realized that the iPod, which has been around for years is actually (oh no!) a hard drive, and came out with a scary report about how they should be completely banned from the workplace, because (just like the telephone, the internet and a photocopying machine before it) it can be misused. Well, someone over in the UK military apparently believed all the hype and has decided to ban the iPod. Thank goodness, the world is now safe from military staff listening to MP3s. Update: But wait... thanks to Bryan in the comments, it turns out that this story is now being denied.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Thumbdrives anyone ?

    So they ban IPods ...
What about our tiny little USB thumb drives or smart media cards & readers ?

If I want to steal data I doubt highly I would use an IPOD.

Thats our government for ya !
