3 Says Its Customers Are Nuts; Need To Be Locked Up In Walled Gardens
from the we-don't-believe-in-choice-around-here... dept
Hutchison's 3G carrier 3 in the UK has taken an awful lot of criticism over the years. They launched a 3G service in the UK by hyping it up ridiculously, without ever considering what customers might actually want to use it for. They simply assumed that everyone would buy expensive and ugly phones to send video messages back and forth. Now, they've decided that anyone who wants open internet access on their phone is "nuts" and they're going to keep their walled gardens in place. Certainly, there's a place for mobile-optimized content. However, blocking off other content, isn't about protecting their "crazy" customers, but about trying to protect a business model that is increasingly irrelevant. It seems odd that they would block off something because customers don't want it. If they simply opened up their system, then customers could choose for themselves. Apparently having options would just be too crazy, though.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
