Can You Fine Me Now?

from the that'll-teach-you dept

If you thought New York City's ban on using a mobile phone at any kind of performance (with its $50 fine) was a bit much, you might want to avoid the libraries in Huntington Beach, California. You can now get fined up to $1,000 for using your phone in the library. Admittedly, that's only for your third strike. The first offense is $250, the second $500. They had considered a 6 month jail term but decided, all in all, that might be a bit much.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Let me guess

Was it foreigners with no respect for our laws/manners, that made them pass a law like that? I don't know how many times I was in a Silicon Valley movie theater, and some foreigner started talking on the phone nearby.

    No Subject Given

Neither the fines nor the limitations are enough. Mobile phone use while operating a motor vehicle should come with penalties similar to DUI.

Isn't a firing squad good enough? I see these idiots not only letting their phones ring in a theater, but also answering them and carrying on a conversion. They'll talk at high volume in a store, in a restaurant, while walking down the street, anywhere. Most any technology, if cheap enough to get to the general populace, will be misused as though they're the only thing of importance in the entire world.
