Another Thing To Blame On The iPod: Less Guinness

from the the-horror,-the-horror dept

It's amazing the sorts of things they blame on technology these days. Guinness is having a bit of a sales slump these days, and wouldn't you know it, it's because those darn Irish kids are putting all their money into buying iPods rather than heading down to the pub. Next thing you know, we're going to be seeing commercials talking about the poor, poor Guinness plant worker who you are putting out of business by stealing from them by not going to the pub, but rather choosing to spend your money in a way that it does not go into their pockets. The shame of it all.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Perhaps Irish pubs could take a lesson from the Starbucks playbook and install download centers...

The real reason for Guinness' problems

What a red herring! Last week's Sunday Business post reported on the real reasons for Diageo's woes - the revolt by Dublin pubs against their monopolistic price increases - "the guerrilla tactics employed by dozens of publicans in their dispute against supplier Diageo are in danger of spiralling into an open revolt. Discontent among the publican lobby has been simmering since June 1, when Diageo, formerly Guinness Ireland, imposed a 6.2 cent price increase on a pint of beer, or 7.8 cent including Vat. Enraged at the scale of the increase, its timing, and the fact that it did not apply to off-licences, publicans began boycotting certain Diageo products. An estimated 150 pubs are now affected by the dispute, with the numbers rising."
