Atari Goes For The Nostalgia Market... Again

from the keep-trying dept

Acclaim may have gone out of business, but (what's now called) Atari is still trying to keep on ticking. However, they seem to be focusing on hyping up re-released versions of games from their glory days decades ago, appealing to everyone's nostalgia for those blocky games of yesteryear. They're releasing new versions for modern consoles, and a "miniaturized" version of the old Atari 7800 with 20 games built in. Of course, if this sounds familiar, that's because it is. The entity that is now called Atari has been trying to live off the nostalgia market for years, as that seems to be about all they have.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

I'll never tire of playing games like Activision's River Raid ... even though the Techdirt logo is bigger than the entire game. Atari has some great games that just are addictive to play, even if many of today's gamers think they are just repetitive drivel.

I gotta wonder if they're shooting themselves in the foot. Rather than releasing new games under the coveted Atari name, they release these old games- and while they rocked back in 1980, they're quite disappointing now- which makes Atari look worse than if they just let people remember them as the bitchin game-maker of the 80s.
