Spam And Viruses Down?

from the don't-hold-your-breath dept

It's only one month's worth of data (and only data from one company), but MessageLabs is claiming that spam and viruses decreased in August. It could just be that, like everyone else, spammers took vacations in August. However, some are suggesting that the US crackdown on spam operations may have helped. Of course, it should also be noted that that the creator of six of the ten top viruses is currently sitting in a German jail after charged with computer sabotage, which might just explain the slowdown in virus activity. Unfortunately, it's likely that others will come along to fill in the empty spaces left by those arrested until a longer term solution to spam is developed.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    weather

Also, with the hot weather lately, people are not leaving their [trojanned] computers on all day....

Plus Florida probably has a lot of power outages lately, which I think is where Railsky lives.
