Desert Island Internet
from the beats-the-rest dept
It's one of those slow news days, so here's a post that goes well with the story the other day about surviving two weeks without the internet. A "desert-island" style survey that asked people what two media types they would want if they could only have two, showed that 77% of people would take the internet as either one of their first or second choices. In part, of course, this is because the internet can be used as a replacement for many of the functions served by other media types. Still, this type of thinking tends to get people confused that business models for those other media will easily shift online, when clearly, that hasn't been the case. Just because it's a replacement, doesn't mean people will pay for it the same way. Being online changes the business models as well by changing the nature of the material.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
