Desert Island Internet

It's one of those slow news days, so here's a post that goes well with the story the other day about surviving two weeks without the internet. A "desert-island" style survey that asked people what two media types they would want if they could only have two, showed that 77% of people would take the internet as either one of their first or second choices. In part, of course, this is because the internet can be used as a replacement for many of the functions served by other media types. Still, this type of thinking tends to get people confused that business models for those other media will easily shift online, when clearly, that hasn't been the case. Just because it's a replacement, doesn't mean people will pay for it the same way. Being online changes the business models as well by changing the nature of the material.
