Intel Kills Plans For PC Access Point
Intel has decided to kill off plans to offer desktop PCs with a built in access point after everyone started telling them, "yo, access points are incredibly cheap -- no one needs this." In fact, adding the feature to the PC would cost more than having it as a separate access point and would make it much more difficult to upgrade or replace if something went wrong (and, having a few dead WiFi routers collecting dust, I can say for certain that things do go wrong). Sometimes, converged items really shouldn't be converged. It seems like a much more interesting concept is to do something like just adding networked storage to the access point (though, again, you have the breakage/upgrade problem). The thing is, honestly, you want to place your access point in the place where it will best cover the area you want covered -- and that's often not the best place for a PC.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
