PalmSource Finally Shows Its Smartphone OS
Took 'em long enough. While just about everyone has known that the future of the PDA market was in smartphones, the folks at PalmOne and PalmSource have been twiddling their thumbs -- often giving lipservice to the idea, but seemingly unable to do very much (other than buy Handspring for their Treos). Now, PalmSource is finally revealing their smartphone operating system -- and they claim it will soon be included on 11 different products, though they fail to name which ones. Of course, there already are a few smartphones powered by PalmOS, so you can assume those will make the jump, but it may be interesting to see who else they've convinced that they can be a serious alternative to Symbian and Microsoft. In the meantime, many people actually (surprisingly) claim they're pretty damn happy with their current smartphone or PDA OS provider and plan to stick with them going forward (suggesting, perhaps, that PalmSource isn't as late to the game as you would think...).Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
