OQO: Vapor No More... But That Doesn't Mean It's Worth Buying

from the overhyped,-underdelivered dept

After two and a half years of hype and promises and vaporware awards, it appears that "the handheld computer that could (hype)" has finally been released. Yes, despite the fact that there are four or five companies working on nearly identical products, and despite the fact that the original was promised at under $1,000 (as opposed to the nearly $2,000 it is), the OQO is finally shipping. It also didn't live up to its initial billing as a computer that would act as a "core" for other form factors... such as a desktop or laptop where you could simply slot in the OQO and be on your way. It does have a desktop docking station, but it doesn't seem to have all the ports your standard docking station would have, and it appears the company has moved away from that "core component" concept (though, some of the other handheld companies are still working on that). Walt Mossberg is not impressed. The NY Times calls it "amazing," and then proceeds to pick apart all its weaknesses. Some early adopters may like it as a (pricey) novelty item, but it probably makes sense to wait until a few other full powered handheld computers hit the market.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

The lack of a combo DVD/CD drive is a major stumbling block on this.

Otherwise, I would slap down my plastic & buy one immediately.

    waiting for next generation
