Keeping Ads In Video Games Up-To-Date

from the can't-be-obsolete dept

It's really no huge surprise that advertisements eventually found their way into video games. Some had been predicting it ages ago. After all, if the eyeballs are there, the ads will eventually follow. However, in video games, advertisers have needed to be careful to make sure they didn't come up with an ad that was timely or might be obsolete when people are still playing a game. That might not be true any more. The latest in ads within video games is that companies may soon be able to update their ads on the fly, so the billboards you pass on the virtual streets in whatever random video game you're playing may soon include an ad for the latest hit movie. Of course, who knows if players actually care about the ads on billboards in video games, but advertisers aren't known for making sure their ads actually matter.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Timely

The word "timely" means "in time" not "late". FYI.

    I wouldn't mind if...

... that meant I could get an advertisement-free game at full price or a game with advertisements at a reduced price.
I doubt either way will happen, they'll still charge 50$ a pop while they fill their pockets with money.
