Qualcomm Eases Into Partnership With GSM Handset Maker
With GSM winning the biggest share of the worldwide mobile market, one might think that Qualcomm, the main proponent in the CDMA camp, would be at a loss. However, since they own lots of IP rights to the GSM 3G evolution W-CDMA technology, they're crying all the way to the bank. Also, as the chipmaker with the most CDMA experience, they are well positioned to win new business in the previously verboten GSM camp. Case in point is the deal announced today where Germany's Siemens will use Qualcomm MSM chips in it's upcoming W-CDMA handsets. Other winners in the losing CDMA side are likely to include Korean phone or chipmakers like Samsung. By the way, remember a few weeks ago when we covered the surprising inclusion of MSFT's media technology in Qualcomm chips? Guess who will be sliding into Siemens phones through the backdoor...Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
