Drive-By-Porn Becoming An Epidemic?

from the keep-your-eyes-on-the-damn-road dept

Earlier this year we wrote about efforts to make it illegal to have pornographic videos showing on in-car video screens. Apparently, the issue has been getting a lot more attention lately, and even its own name: drive-by porn. Those against it claim that it distracts drivers and children shouldn't be able to see such things. While I agree that children shouldn't be able to see such things, the argument about drivers is ridiculous. The driver should have his or her eyes on the road, not on some video screen. Besides, every time I've seen another car on the road with an in-car video screen, it's usually quite small and difficult to make out what's on the screen. Anyone paying that much attention to those screens in other cars shouldn't be driving. Either way, it seems like there are probably a lot more important things that the highway patrol should be protecting us from than drive-by porn.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Isn't this an "Existing Law" thing? What does video and the screen have to do with it?

If I tape a photo, or for that matter airbrush a really photo-realistic scene, on my automobile that's distracting in a lewd sort of way... is that legal?

We've been trained from birth to stare at the little glowing screen. We (IT involved people) spend every day, most of the day staring at a glowing screen. Its (almost) Pavlovian that if you see a screen, you stare at it.

Yes, definitely should be looking at the road, but if you see a lit screen during the evening hours on the way home, you often find yourself unconsciously looking at it. Its why I find even those Auto Plaza giant monitors kind of annoying, in that there ALWAYS seems to be slowdown next to them, and you can often see people's heads craning as they drive past.

    It Should Be Illegal

Um... maybe the parents who are driving and aren't really able to pay much attention are worried about the kids, who aren't driving and have plenty of time/opportunity/curiousity. Now-a-days it could even be a so called R-rated movie which you just happen to drive by at the wrong time. Or maybe you're sitting at the stoplight that goes on for minutes.....
