Next Gen Canopy Solution Launched

We often discuss BWA (Broadband Wireless Access) technologies here at Techdirt, but don't often enough mention Motorola's Canopy solution. Canopy is an OFDM, interference resistant solution that operates mostly in unlicensed spectrum, and has been deployed by a number of smaller, under-the-press-buzz-radar WISPs. Add to the fact that it is greatly overshadowed by WiMAX hype, and strangely under-hyped by Motorola, and you get the sleeper story of the BWA game. Today, Motorola unveiled the Canopy Advantage Platform, which features faster speeds, and built-in QoS for supporting VoIP. Perhaps we don't see as much of Canopy since it's proprietary and uses unlicensed spectrum - it isn't quite what we consider carrier-grade (it's tough to guarantee service without licensed spectrum). Carrier-grade or no, Canopy is not a flash-in-the-pan, so we'll try to follow it more closely going forward.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Motorola Canopy

Derek, Canopy has been available and use in licensed spectrum bands (3.5GHz) for 2 years now and has a good following. many of which are carrier grade - as always its in countries where spectrum has been made available at lower cost and justifies a business case. Peter
