Anonymous Mobile Bullying Helpline -- Or New Bullying Tool

from the how-helpful-is-it? dept

There have been a ton of stories about how bullying by text message is a growing problem, but very few talk about solutions. One school in the UK is testing out an anonymous SMS bully line, where kids can alert school officials about bullies anonymously. It's an interesting idea, but does it actually work? First, if it's truly anonymous, then how can the school verify the bullying? In fact, this system could become a tool of bullies who accuse other of bullying. If it's not really anonymous, then it's no different that usual systems for students to let teachers know that someone is bullying them -- and most students are afraid to do so, for fear of retribution.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Thanks for the evidence?

If someone sends you bullying IM, doesn't it include your name or phone number in the From: section?

Couldn't you just go to a teacher/principal and show them the message and the header information?

Yes, this seems like a stupid idea when SMS messages are traceable to begin with.

This will be throughly abused by those that it was meant to thwart.
