OMA Wireless DRM Standard Gains Traction
According to a study by Baskerville, the OMA standards for DRM will grow in use for mobile media content through 2005. The OMA, or Open Mobile Alliance, is a mobile standards body formed in 2002 by over 200 member companies ranging from mobile carriers to equipment vendors. According to Baskerville, the OMA DRM standard benefits from "strong support from leading telecom, IT and media companies that will reaffirm OMA's DRM position in relation to proprietary solutions." On the whole, if DRM standards are going to be a fact of life, we'd rather see them come from a wide-ranging standards body like the OMA, than from multiple, private companies with incompatible standards. Unfortunately, they are going to be a fact of life, and they probably will come from multiple incompatible sources. Let the customer confusion begin!
