Grudgingly Accepting VoWiFi

from the yeah,-okay,-let's-try dept

There are a number of different challenges facing telcos (both wired and wireless) in the coming years, and two of the big ones are VoIP and WiFi. Increasingly, the combo of the two (VoWiFi) is stirring up a lot of interest. While the possibilities are interesting, it might not be a bandwagon to get too excited about just yet. As the article above mentions, mobile carriers are finally agreeing to move towards offering VoWiFi, but they're doing it with great reluctance -- and most of the early offerings are noticeably crippled. More importantly, however, is the question of just how much benefit there is to VoWiFi phones. WiFi networks still don't do handoffs and roaming all that well, meaning VoWiFi becomes more of a station to station type of system, rather than a true mobile system -- which is a serious limitation for many. Also, many mobile phone plans now offer near flat rate (huge buckets of minutes) deals -- meaning there are little to no savings for end users by routing calls over the internet. That's not to say it doesn't have it's place. It is, clearly, a space to watch, but it's unlikely to put any carriers out of business in the near future.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

MVNO will be the way to go

I am long convinced that the only way innovation will appear in the mobile market is through MVNOs.

There's another reason WiFi phones will take off..

Which is: Distribution of digital media, and real-time multiuser gaming, that is not restricted to WAN type networks.
