Shocker: 72 Hour Degrees Online Are A Scam
from the who-would-have-thought-that?!? dept
Would you believe that a website online claiming to be a university that gives diplomas in 72 hours without any qualifications other than a check that doesn't bounce is actually a scam? Yeah, it must seem totally shocking, but only now, after plenty of examples of people buying degrees from such diploma mills is anyone cracking down. Pennsylvania has sued two men for running such a "university", though they seem to be going after them with anti-spam laws, rather than fraud laws, which is a bit disappointing.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Why fraud?
If I offer to sell you a piece of clothing worn by Jesus complete with certificate of authenticity, but I don't specify that it was really Jesus Gonzales, a hispanic guy from down the street, is it fraud? How about if I claim it has significant religious history (it's his lucky undershirt he wore every time to church)?
As long as they aren't making intentionally false claims that can't be disproven, then they didn't commit fraud.
