UK Anti-Spam Law Completely Useless
from the well-that-did-a-lot-of-good dept
While at least in the US, CAN SPAM has been used in charges here or there (though, usually, where other charges make more sense), a similar law in the UK that we described as too little, too late last year, has been shown to be even more useless. In the year since it's been in effect, it has never been used, and there's no indication that it's going to be used any time soon. The article quotes someone in the UK government suggesting that, rather than because the law is ineffectual, the lack of prosecutions is because it's scared all the spammers out of the UK and into the US. While it is likely that plenty of UK spam is coming from the US, it seems hard to believe that UK-based spammers have put down their mail servers and given up based on this particular law.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
