Those Two Turtle Doves Are Going To Be A Bit Late

from the whoops dept

In the late 90s there were stories every year about how e-commerce was growing -- but that companies were having trouble getting their shipments in on time. The FTC even cracked down and fined a bunch of retailers for, well, ruining Christmas. Every year, retailers insist that this year they'll get it right... and every year there are problems. Last year, the problem was with RedEnvelope who realized they were falling behind and had to spend all their leftover money (and then some) on expedited shipping. Amazon.com has always tried to position themselves as the leader in this area, but it looks like their UK branch is going to be the straggler this year. Due to a variety of mishaps, it looks like a lot of Amazon UK customers won't be getting their gifts on time this year. In some cases, it's particularly problematic. iPods that were ordered back in November aren't expected to ship until February. DVDs and books that some ordered are apparently just going out now, and aren't expected to be delivered until next week. Update: Amazon UK is now denying the story, saying that the only item they have had a problem with are the iPods.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

We're one of those Amazon.co.uk customers... It doesn't seem to just be Amazon though - we were surfing sites for presents and quite a few of them had stock shortages in early December (e.g. Toys R Us).

I know this is anecdotal but it looked like quite a few of the sites had screwed up their stock calculations. How long will be it be before we see articles about how good the online shopping season was in the UK this Christmas?!
