Wireless Video For The Back Seat
Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. reported that Sirius will offer three channels of children's video over their satellite service starting in 2006. The service will be delivered by video displays in the back seat of vehicles, where the little munchkins spend their travel hours. There is a great deal of sense in targeting the wee ones, since they are often bored in the rear of the car, the parents want to distract them, and the nature of the programming can be such that it is delivered in 5 minute chunks as opposed to 2 hour movies. Cartoons make an obvious example. Children also have a greater ability to be satisfied only watching partial programs, unlike adults. This is important since in a broadcast mode, every customer must watch the same program at the same time, which means that the programs do not start and stop when your family enters or exits the vehicle... Imagine how much fun it will be to pull your kid away from a partial program once arrived at Gramma's. A parting thought: As a child, I remember learning a lot about my world through the car windows during road trips. The sky, the culture, the shops, the landscape. Maybe that's the best programming for our kids.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
