The New Divide In Wireless: CDMA vs OFDM

The Wireless Watch folks are taking a look at some of the recent developments in the broadband wireless world and are suggesting that it's pretty much dividing into two camps: CDMA-based technologies, such as those found in today's 3G offerings and OFDM-based technologies found in other wireless broadband solutions, including mobile WiMax (eventually). If you look at it that way, it certainly does make some of the recent moves make a bit more sense. The launch of the "Super 3G" effort becomes the CDMA camp showing that they plan to come up with an alternative to a 4G solution that's related to WiMax. The real story is a bit more complex than what's described here, but this certainly is one way the battle lines may be drawn. Of course, in some sense, it's tough to get too worked up about competing vaporware offerings just yet. A lot of things can happen between now and any time that these products see the light of day.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
