No Room For Slang In Google AdWords, Yo

from the only-proper-english,-please dept

While the internet is infamous among English teachers everywhere for spreading slang all over the place, one place where slang is apparently not welcome is within Google. Apparently, it is "not evil" to correct an advertiser's grammatical mistakes. That's why Google has its own AdWords stylebook and will reject advertisements not written in proper English. So, please, don't ask people to: "check 'em out!" You need to write: "check them out." Considering that advertising, of all things, is a fairly creative endeavor and often uses bad grammar and spelling on purpose, it makes you wonder. While it's become acceptable usage now, would Google have forced Apple to correct "Think Different" into "Think Differently"?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    No Subject Given

So that's why I haven't seen any ads with the slang terms "dood", "l33t", and the improper use of puncutation "!!!!!111".
