Searchers Think They're Smart, But They're Not
from the we're-all-better-than-average dept
Just like drivers who will all report themselves as being better than average, it appears that most users of search engines consider themselves fairly handy with a keyword or two. Unfortunately, many really have absolutely no clue about search results page muck that they wade into. Very few realize, for example, how "paid search" or "paid inclusion" programs work -- and they even say they wouldn't use a search engine that isn't clear about those policies. However, many are still searching on the engines that do exactly that. Also, it appears that some people believe they're handy with search engines because they get results from them. They don't necessarily look to see if they're the right results, but because a search engine gives them plenty of results, they assume they did something right, and therefore, must have excellent search engine skills.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
