EU Software Patents Delayed Or About To Be Accepted?
from the confusion... dept
The issue of software patents in the EU refuses to die. While the issue has been delayed a few times, it is apparently going to be up for a vote again soon. Of course, it's tough to tell what's really going on, as the press coverage on the issue isn't entirely clear. A few sources are writing about how the issue was supposed to be voted on today, but that Poland has delayed the issue again, as they're still not comfortable with the concept of software patents and how they could harm innovation. Of course, other reports of the situation suggest that the issue wasn't expected to be voted on today, but is expected to be ratified next Monday. So, despite all the talk, it may turn out that Europe will have software patents after all, and we can look forward to plenty of pointless patent battles there while software innovation moves elsewhere.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
