Let Them Watch Commercials!

from the trends-in-advertisements dept

Over at E-Media Tidbits, Steve Outing is realizing that many of the "luxury" consumer electronics products he's been buying lately (a DVR, satellite radio) have let him pretty much remove typical commercial advertisements from his daily entertainment consumption. Since these still are luxury items, however, he wonders if commercial advertising trends will change, and begin to focus on less affluent segments of the population. In other words, will there be fewer TV and radio commercials for luxury cars, while, instead increased advertising for the local discount store? It might still be a stretch. As we've seen, good commercials still get plenty of attention, and advertisers will eventually figure out how to adjust to continue to target the more affluent parts of society that they like to go after anyway.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    "Let them eat X" args

fwiw, the context within which Marie Antoinette offered such words (if she ever did say such a thing at all) differs quite a bit from the way we understand such phrases today... for instance, try:
