Kodak's Digital Strategy Starting To Pay Off

from the turned-it-around,-did-they? dept

Kodak was clearly a business that had to change. While it's difficult for any business to really embrace the fact that their cash cow core business is becoming obsolete, Kodak actually did so. While they had tinkered with digital photography over the past few years, a year and a half ago, the company decided that it was really putting all of its emphasis on digital photography, and was no longer going to look at the analog film business as its core. While it hasn't completely made it through the fire, it does look like parts of Kodak's strategy are really starting to pay off. They've become the number two inkjet printer seller in the world, thanks to their photo printers, and many of its other products designed around digital photography are showing decent growth. There's still a long way to go, and not everyone believes Kodak will be able to make it, but so far, it's turning into a fascinating case study in how to completely turn around your business by embracing what people want, when technology makes your existing business models obsolete.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
