Sun Finally Rolls Out Hosted Grid Computing Offering

from the took-'em-long-enough dept

They've only been talking about it for years, but Sun has finally rolled out their pay-per-use grid or utility hosted computing solution that will let users pay based on how much they actually use. Remember, this was supposed to be the big computing battle of like 2003 between HP, Sun and IBM -- except that not too many people showed up. Part of the problem has been poor marketing, but even more importantly companies just aren't that comfortable with the concept while others don't see why they should outsource something they still view as a core competency rather than a commodity (apologies to Nicholas Carr, of course).

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

What if there's already plenty of service?

There are firms in places like Harrisburgh, PA that have spent decades processing credit card transactions on mainframes. The notion of having people's credit card numbers flying around on the internet won't go over too well.
