Do Users Want Advanced Services Or Not?

It's getting tough to tell what users really want out of their mobile phones these days. In the past couple of weeks there have been a few studies all saying that people don't want advanced services on their mobile phones. They just want good coverage and low prices. In other words they want the phones to do what they bought them for: communicate with others. However, a new study suggests that people are more open to advanced services... though only if they're explained well. The two studies aren't completely contradictory. Basically, what people are saying is they don't want advanced services for the sake of advanced services. A mobile phone is a communications device, first and foremost, and anything that takes away from that ability is seen as a bad thing. However, if more advanced services that fit in with that communications goal are added, without harming the basic features, they'll be interested.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
