Understanding, Not Worrying, How The Internet Changes Language

While there have been plenty of stories about teachers freaking out that students were spending time writing in "txt speak" or other internet related shorthand, it looks like more are coming to terms with it now. While some think it's a good thing to get students writing, no matter what the form, others are studying internet-based writing in more detail, and discovering that (as many of you probably suspected), it's closely related to how people speak, informally -- and that many students are able to recognize when formal writing is necessary. In other words, there's absolutely nothing to worry about. Move along now. Nothing to see here at all...
