MBA Admissions Results Hacked

from the welcome... dept

It appears that universities still haven't totally gotten the hang of the whole electronic admissions process. In the past, we've had stories about admission acceptance emails caught by spam filters, rejected applicants being sent emails saying they were accepted and (everyone's favorite) the case where Princeton admissions officials hacked into Yale's servers to see who they were admitting. The latest isn't quite as serious, but apparently over-anxious MBA applicants got an early notice as someone posted details on Business Week's online forums on how to hack into a service that hosts admissions letters for a number of business schools to see whether or not they had been accepted before the official announcements are sent. Of course, the only real "damage" here was people finding out earlier whether or not they got in -- but it does show how some of these systems still need to be a bit more secure.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
