The Coming Online Political Speech Crackdown
from the bye-bye-political-blogs dept
It looks like the case from last fall that said the internet had to be regulated by McCain-Feingold is starting to get much more attention. A few weeks ago we highlighted an article noting that this would make it difficult to support a politician online. Even linking to your favorite candidate's website might become illegal. News.com is now running an interview with one of the commissioners at the Federal Election Commission talking about how a link to a politician's website may now be counted as a "contribution." He admits that it's going to be a big problem -- but that, thanks to partisan fighting, the FEC can't get enough votes to appeal the ruling. Of course, the one good thing about all of this is that it may highlight some of the absurdities of McCain-Feingold as a restriction on free speech.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
