Musicians Who Support Grokster Told They've Been Used

from the hmm dept

Earlier this week, we wrote about how a number of musicians have filed a brief with the Supreme Court supporting Grokster, and talking about how file sharing is a big opportunity. As you might imagine, this has upset many people in the industry who seem to believe (once again) that there can be no possible business model associated with free file sharing. In fact, one group seems to imply that these musicians have been brainwashed, but that with time, they can be led back to a path of righteousness.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    P2P and the Industry

Given that the fundamental model for a record deal is essentially sharecropping, it's no wonder that record companies are doing all they can to keep the artists "down on the farm." Imagine their comments as coming from old Southern white guys talking about their black sharecroppers and they become much easier to understand.

These idiots would go away a lot faster if people would stop giving them money.
There ARE alternatives, support them, create content, whatever.
My project, free legal music and other downloads.
    Epitonic More music
Magnatune A label that isn't evil, more downloads.
But apparently none of these exist...
