Mobile Carrier Fined For Spamming Competitor's Subscribers

from the pure-stupidity dept

You would think that a mobile carrier would be sensitive to the concept of mobile spam. However, it appears that many are still quite clueless. While there have been quite a few cases of carriers accused of text message spamming their own customers, in Denmark, it appears that German mobile operator Debitel sent SMS spam to subscribers of competitor Telmore trying to get them to switch providers. Beyond getting fined for the SMS spam, one would hope that this stunt would have the opposite of the intended effect, and would make many people stay away from the spamming operator.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    SMS Spam

AT&T (back when they were) did this to me when I first got my phone. Apparently, though, I couldn't call it spam, since there was an opt-out bit at the end, often times in l33t. By default, I received these (opted-in), and I had to call in to AT&T to get them to stop.
