Did Barry Diller Just Admit He Bought Ask Jeeves On A Whim?
from the seems-to-be-what-he's-saying dept
While certainly there was some head scratching over why Barry Diller's IAC bought AskJeeves, statements out of the company today are even more strange. The company has admitted that going forward they're going to be "more selective." Does that mean, they weren't particularly selective at all in buying Ask Jeeves? Apparently so: "We would look at other things but the bar would be higher." Makes you wonder if they're having a bit of buyer's remorse. While they go on to say that Ask Jeeves will be an important part of their strategy going forward, it still seems like an odd, and somewhat disparaging, thing to say about their newly acquired search engine property.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

But buying #4 player in the industry... I don't know, sort of like staying in "Second Best Western" hotel (was in one of the Simpsons episodes).
