Congressman Takes Aim At Point-Click-Kill Sites

from the american-grandstand dept

A few weeks ago we wrote about how the reaction to Internet hunting seemed a bit overblown, with several states proposing legislation to ban a practice that seems unlikely to attract many participants. Apparently the reaction wasn't overblown enough. This week, Virginia Rep. Tom Davis decided to make it a federal issue, introducing a bill to make hosting such a service a crime punishable by up to five years in prison. Though it may sound a bit excessive, there will likely be little opposition to the bill, which is being backed by an odd coalition including the Humane Society, the Safari Club, and the NRA.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Oh? So Military Personnel is Exempt from the Law?

Wait, wait don't tell me... it is unethical and immoral to participate in hunting over the web, but it's perfectly fine to take out a few people (Death by Laptop - P2PNet.net) via laptop and wireless network. Are you kidding? Someone quick, send this story to the sponsors of the bill.
