Verizon's DSL Still Partially Clothed

from the not-so-naked-after-all dept

Sneaky, sneaky, sneaky. We really shouldn't have been surprised that yesterday's Verizon announcement concerning naked DSL apparently contained so many catches that it's not really naked at all. It's partially clothed. In fact, it's almost fully clothed. The details: you can't actually get Verizon DSL without phone service -- which is what "naked DSL" implies. If you are an existing Verizon DSL and phone customer in a few markets in the Northeast then you can port your number to a different local provider. That's it. You can't ditch phone service. You can only move it to a different provider. It's not clear, though, if that different provider can be a VoIP company. In other words, Verizon (which had been taking PR hits for repeatedly delaying naked DSL), announced naked DSL without naked DSL. This should benefit about three people, who somehow decide that they want phone service from, say MCI, instead of Verizon... oh wait, then they're still with Verizon.

    Verizon raises prices on DSL

On my Verizon phone bill I received yesterday, Verizon raised the price of residential DSL by $3, bringing the total to $37.95. They're getting close to the "look at cable modem pricing" price.

..unless that provider wants you to pay for basic tv cable to get the internet service, or the provider is comcast...

    naked DSL in NY

    Hi Mike,

I red your article re naked dsl and I just wanted to let you know that I tried to order "naked DSL" from Verizon in NY but they refused. They said that I have to get a phone line too. Is there a way I can fight that?

    Thanks

    Gideon

    ?

I switched from cabal to Verizon Naked DSL last August. They never said a thing about having to bundle land-line. $35 for 720 up, 2.8-ish down, and I'm very happy with it. They've been busily stringing fiber throughout my neighborhood, so FIOS is coming, and I'll have to decide whether more bandwidth is worth more money, though they haven't announced specific pricing yet. I haven't seen Michael's $3 jack-up yet, but I'll keep an eye out.

I currently have verizon naked dsl for $22. i have a voip for phone service. when i called for naked DSL last year i told them i saw the ad for naked dsl for 19.99 in my email and wanted to get it. they gave it to me but then after 2 months they increased it to $22. Its still a good deal. i have been using it for over a year now. Just make sure when you call them just tell them you saw a deal for 19.99 and they should give it to you.
