Online Tax Filing Sites Probably Illegal

from the oops dept

This just gets better and better. Now that it's way too late to do anything about it, we've already learned that the IRS's database of information from e-filers is not at all secure -- and hasn't been for years. Now comes the additional news that if you used Intuit's or H&R Block's tax filing websites in California, you were probably tracked illegally. It turns out that both sites use a combination of web bugs and cookies to track what you do on their site for the sake of advertising -- violating a California law that prohibits tracking and disclosing your actions on an e-tax filing site. Despite the complaints in the article, it doesn't sound like the companies in question were really doing anything that bad, but anything involving tracking what you do and taxes tends to get people a bit on edge.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
