Yahoo Sued Over Child Porn It Didn't Know About
from the not-this-again dept
It never fails. Even though the laws are pretty clear that a service provider isn't responsible for content that passes over its network, people always try to sue anyway. Call it the Steve Dallas defense. The latest is that a family that was a victim of a child porn ring is suing Yahoo for allowing a child porn email group to exist. Obviously, the fact that this child and his family was victimized is terrible. However, the guy really responsible for the crime has already been found guilty, and it seems like the victims are now just looking for a big company to sue. The family is charging that Yahoo knew what was happening on this mailing list and failed to stop it -- a charge that will be quite hard to prove. It's good to go after those responsible for child porn, but going after Yahoo is going after the wrong target.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
